Converting Stainless Marine wet to dry???
 

Has anyone converted their Stainless Marine pipes from wet to dry? If so, did you have Stainless do it or someone else? My pipes terminate roughly 6" from the transom, and it doesn't look like it would be too difficult for and experienced welder/exhuast guy to extend my existing pipes so they would terminate outside the transom???

How will you keep the rubber connection tubes from melting?

They would no longer be there. Modifying the existing pipes to extend through the transom. ;)

With water jackets? If not, they'll get hot enough to glow and set your boat on fire.

Stainless marine can make you a set of full length dry tailpipes. Just call them and tell them what you need and they'll send you a worksheet where you fill in some measurements and they build them. Be careful measuring. I believe you can get either a fitting on the tailpipe so you can route the water dump through hull or get the small tubes that exit right in the end of the pipe.

I sent mine to Stainless Marine. They added about 1' of water jacketed tailpipe and put a small piss tube out the end of each pipe for $800 a set (one motor). That was in the middle of last summer also. Give them a call and talk to Brownie. They will take care of you.

If your current tails are jacketed to the end, I would think any good welder can extend them to go all the way thru the transom and keep them dry. He would probably need to cut off a inch or two from the outer pipe, in order to gain access to weld the inner pipes together, then slide the outer pipe over the inner pipe and weld the outers together. Then you can either seal up the very ends and weld a bung just inside the transom to dump overboard, or just let the water exit via a 1" hole at the very end of the pipe, which is what I would do. This way if you decide to add clamp on mufflers, the water will keep them cool and not turn them blue from the heat. Im no expert on this subject, but just some of my thoughts.

It is very easy to due if ya have a exspierenced welder.....The problem lies in the cost of the material, it is very exspensive per foot and it comes unpolished.....If ya have a lot of money just call stainless marine and have them make them for ya.....If you are like me make your own and trust your welders ability and buy a good buffing wheel.....

do dry pipes increase power, and performance or do they just sound better?
