Merc 525EFI
Does anyone have more information about this motor? I am looking to have a boat built and would like to know more about this option.
Thanks! |
merc doesn't make this
They make a 575 with fuel inj. but the 525 was a 454, 177 blower w/ 1050 dom. carb 490 hp
|
Mike-there is a new 525 coming out. It's related to the HP500efi
|
I did find out it isn't suppose to be available until the 2003 model year, like julyish timeframe.
Curious as to what the changes were for the extra 25hp? |
Just saw it at the Maimi show. Has aluminum heads, fresh water cooling, differant throttle body, new CMI headers, uses the new 555 ECM. About $6k more than the 500.

Specs:
500Hp 502 Ci 8.75:1 Compression 87 Octane MPI Very similar to the 500EFI just with more HP |
Thank's for the information and the pic, closed cooling, that is very nice! $5K for closed cooling and 25HP.. Boating sure gets expensive fast!
|
$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
Beg your pardon that's 30 more hp!!!!!! When will this Merc rage stop?????? Is MPI worth that kind of money? NOT IN MY BOOK! Really, how much does it cost to build a 500 hp 502 by a good engine builder and then take it further and have him dyno it. Do it right and it will be 95% as good as an MPI motor. Till we have a smoge law to hell with MPI. Sorry Cord I did read about the 525 but I didn't think it was even close to prototype.

Hey Raypanic, I was looking at your picture of the 525 and noticed that I am in the back behind the guy with the grey shirt.
|
I asked the price and they told me it would be 8K more than 500efi. I cannot imagine that the performance will be much different than 500efi. its only 5%hp more for 6-8K?????? However the closed cooling is a good idea.
My 2 cents:p |
When they dump the 500 EFI you wont have a choice:(
|
GOT YA BUY THE BALLS
Ray is soooo right!
|
I asked if they planned on getting rid of the 500efi??? They said no, but it doesn't make since to have two motors sooo close in performance????? But then again the 575 is only 50hp more than the 525 now??? thats only 9.1% more HP? than 525, I think merc is just charging allot of money to those who want just a little more. (all of us)

What does a closed cooling system cost????? Aftermarket??
|
Up until this year, Volvo Penta offered an Innovation-built 525 (PROP horsepower) package with closed cooling, a slightly less sophisticated engine management/EFI system, and a 2-year pulley-to-prop warranty for $3k LESS than a 500 (really 470)EFI. Since everyone voted with their wallets, and preferred to pay more for less (Merc's 500EFI), Volvo dropped the line. The boatbuying public preferred blue paint over a better deal....
Moral: If you don't like the price, don't buy it. I didn't. I have 3 boats, and the only thing I own from Mercury are trim tabs. The money I saved will pay for my boating for the next 3 years. |
C-Spray, I looked into the Volvo line, I don't think Fountain offered it??? I really wish, IMCO and say Chief or Plaff ............. would team up and offer a package. I don't understand why they don't. Both offer warrentys????????

27Fountain - There were more than a couple of Fountains built with DPX's a few years ago (including a triple). Reggie liked the package, and had plans to market it as a "TrueTracking" package, or some such name. However, the whole project didn't sit well with Big Black, and since they had lots of leverage over Reggie, all the boats quietly disappeared to Europe.
Mercury builds a very nice product, no doubt, and the 525 and 1050 have a lot of good features on them like aluminum heads, (and therefore) closed cooling, distributorless ignition, pregressive rev limiters, boost control, and sequential injection. Technology costs money, though. On the other hand, competition drives prices down - look at computers and other electronics these days. Right now, marketing and momentum are on Mercury's side. |
