Average "expected" life of a '95 502 (415HP)?
 

Just wondering, I am looking at a boat that has what I believe to be the original motors with 483 hours. It is a bank repo, so I haven't heard much detail on the history of the motors and drives.

Now then, I know this can vary greatly depending on the boat, driver, maintenance schedule and other conditions.

What would you say would be the AVERAGE amount of hours when one should start to really worry about rebuilds or re-power?

Boat is a Fountain SC, motors appear clean, fresh water use, from what I know they were never messed with as far as power adding mods.

I've seen those motors run well for quite a stretch. I might think about it at 700hrs...I am sure depending on use they could go 1000+. One of the Biggest killer would be riser gaskets. The only way to know for sure is a comp. check and a leak down if the comp. is low. An oil sample might give some insite on future life expct.

with carefull maintenance, I have seen them go about 2000 hours. I had a 454 go 1600 hours myself, until I decided to repower for more HP. the engine still ran strong, and I sold it cheap to somebody that needed a running long block.

I am a firm beliver in synthetic oil.

A buddy just pulled a pair of 415 mpi's with 1300 hrs with good oil psi. and no broken valve springs. GOOD MOTORS!!!!!:D

I had 800 hours on the 502's in the boat I just sold before Christmas. If taken care of well over 1000 hours is not unheard of.

I have a buddy that had a 29 Scarab with the 415, at 500hours he wanted to rebuild,He ran the shet out of it,95% wfo!!! Ive been with him on poker run banging the rev limiter,They will take some abuse.When i tore it down it looked like new on the inside, the bearing were good,no wear in the cylinders, the valve spring still had the speck on seat pressure,

I have another buddy that had a 29 Scarab 415 with a procharger, he was the same way,WFO even with the supercharger on it.He ran it so hard that when i was working on it one and just happen to look at the oil pan. it had been so hot the paint had cracked and looked like a cracked up dry lake bed,Even getting on plane he took it to the wood every time.

483.5 hours and 13 years.........

Last thing I want to do is buy a $50K dollar used boat and face a $20K dollar re power. Sure way to end up divorced.:p

I received 640 hrs on my 99 502 with a side mounted whipple. Finally blew a head gasket but held up great.

The one with 483 hours won't be gotten for $50k. I think I mentioned before in the bother thread that the current note the bank is holding is over $100k, and that a offer of $65k was rejected.

But then again, another month of sitting on it and the bank may reconsider, since the fule is going to go through the roof anyway.
