Just like a jet ski, your boat can be very dangerous if it continues at speed without someone steering it. If there's even the slightest possibility of you getting tossed out, you should have a lanyard setup. There are pics on this site of boats that kept going sans driver- it makes a mess. It also may come back in a big circle and run your a$$ over while you're bobbing in the surf. What's the phrase? "Insult to injury"

most of these boats come with a teather that would clip to your swim-suit etc. I have added a wrist strap to mine that hangs on the throttles when I'm not driving the boat. Too easy to just slip it on my throttle wrist when I go for a ride not to use it.

Absolute must!! I had an outdrive break off at 80+mph. Motor didnt shut down, but I did. Was unconsious for a few mins. Passenger pulled the throttle back, but it was too late for the motor. I always wear my tether now!!

Yup.

Yes, I have a wrist wrap that I use, very handy and safe, if your not using one please tell me where you boat so I can go someplace else! Steve

Any merc dealer.

AK, if you want some more insight on the lanyard issue, do a quick search for "lanyard" and see what pops up. We had a lengthy discussion some months back on this topic. Some great testimonials from people that have been involved in unforeseen "situations" where a lanyard either saved their life or prevented catastrophic damage.

I bought a spare lanyard at Boaters World for less than $10 a couple years ago....it stays in the boat along with 200 lbs of other spare crap!!!!

I have been tossed out at 65. Was by myself and the boat came to a stop within a short distance. The tether kill saved my butt from swimming a looooooooong distance.
Please, not only install a tether kill, but more important---wear it!!!!!! See the Tres Martin web site for some neat wrist tether cords.

I keep an extra set on the boat in the glove box. My kids (frequent passengers) were told where to plug them in and how to start the boat so they can idle over and get me, should I be thrown out. Without the kill switches plugged in, you can't restart the boat...

cuda 04-11-2008 10:13 AM

I wore it clipped to my shorts in the Formual, and around my ankle in the Donzi.

Those are nice.

In poker runs and or rough water it's a must IMO

Negative Ghost Rider, it's a must all the time. You can't plan when an accident is going to happen. If my engines are running the lanyards are hooked.

I went to his site and could not find them. Do you have a link? Thanks!

Look under the "boat sales" heading. $14.95 ea plus $6.00 S&H

Here's my setup. I unclip the wrist band and hook the clip to my lifeline when I have it on during the poker runs. It hangs on the shifter when not in use and it doesn't interfere with docking. It's all jetski stuff available at Overtons.

SANLEONKID 04-11-2008 02:48 PM

Allways... and now it is like putting on seatbelt. Just doesn't seem to be a better reason NOT to .

I was with Tres on Mon / Tues....... many stories (all true) of folks that had NOT put on a tether.

So you took his course??? Well worth the pesos I'm sure.

onesickpantera 04-11-2008 03:47 PM

I've had a hell of a time trying to track down an extra tether. Mine are similar to what hunster pictured but they are deeper/thicker. Every mercruiser and aftermarket one I have found is to shallow to clip on my tether.

So true, Croosin2. Advice well taken.
