Drive break-in period
I have 2 new Alpha drives on my boat and would like to know if the drives need any sort of break-in period. If so, what is recommended?
Thanks, James |
Milord, How are you?
I have never heard of a break in for drives. Run the hell out of em while they are under warranty. Take it easy getting up on plane and maybe add a drive shower. Good Luck :) |
Thanks Whiteknuckle, I am doing great. How are you?
I think I can follow your recommendations!:D |
When I had my drive rebuilt last year, we did include a break in period. There really wasn't much too it. We basically idled for about a quarter mile, and then cruised on plane for a couple of miles. After that it was hammer down. I think he was really concerned about putting some heat in the drive. This was early in the year and the water was very cold.

Run it like you stole it!!!!!!

LMAO Dyno! That's why I'm posing this question, somebody stole the drives that were on it!:D

I gotta like Cords Idea. Sure cant hurt to let all those new parts get to know each other!!!!!! B-fore hammer down!!!

when i had the TRS rebuilt about two years ago i just figured i would break it in the same way you would a rearend on a car.......run it up to operating temp and let it cool all the way down so the gears can "set" so to speak.......when i did mine i ran it on natural gearlube for the first 10hrs then changed to synthetic......no problems since! :D

I went through two brand new alpha gen II's last year!
They run hotter than any other drive. Get a good shower and you can run it like you stole it... Bryan |
here is what we tell our customers.
best thing to do is run up on plane. full throttle for 5 secs close throttle full throttle close ect... for 15 min. this is the propper way to break in the drives. what this will do is set the pattern on the teeth. if you stay on the power the temps go balistic and do lots of damage, breathing the throttle gives the gear time to heal. this is something that really works. pat W:) |
