Oil Changes

I am curious as to what you guys are using to change your engine oil. My dad has electric pump that works well in his cruiser with Chrystlers, but I can't ever seem to get it to work on any of the 4 boats I have owned. I have lengthened the hose, changed impellars etc. I don't want to hear about dumping it in the bilge. I am interested in what pump or device works the best, how much it costs and where to buy it. Not to be a pain but I prefer not to have to make something.

Thanks in advance,

Magic Medicine

I tapped the bottom of the pan and ran SS braided line to the hull with a bulk head next to my drain plug in the center sponsen. I just pull the plug and all the oil drains out, swap the filter, and refill. Very fast and no pump or anything needed.

I use a Jabsco electric pump oil changer I got from West Marine. Sucks all 9 quarts out of my 496 no problem. In fact, I just used it last night!

Mine is very similar. I have an extension hose on the oil pan. It fits through the drain plug hole. It works pretty well.

Whats up brower park neighbor:cool-smiley-027: (checkered advantage)

I don't like using the pumps because it leaves some oil and any other stuff in the pan. That said you can get a basic hose kit from west marine that goes in place of the drain plug.

I used a T-fitting in the drain hole. One side has a braided #8 going forward with a plug for in the boat oil changes. The other side has a braided #8 running to a bulkhead fitting that runs thru the transom. Then I have cap with safety wire to prevent the cap from coming loose. I can get both motors draining in under a minute straight into a bucket with no mess.

just a small note , if you run your engines up to operating temp (140-160 degrees) , those oil changing pumps work 10 times better
and this year i'm putting a threaded fitting in the oil pan drain with a ball valve and 24" rubber hose that i can just keep coiled in the bilge untill oil change time , then just route it thru the drain plug in the hull , and turn the valve

As enforcer says , warm them up first. You'll burn out the pump fast if you don't. Just did mine yesterday!! Almost ready to go.

Thanks for the responces and keep em coming, I always warm the engines up to temp before changing the oil.

Not much, I just looked up the dates for that, we have slips at the municipal in GH for the fireworks, If it was'nt july 4th weekend we would head there for sure.

We have a couple boats heading to the motorcity poker run on may 31st and to watch the redbull air races. You guys should see if you can make it.

Be sure to let me know if you guys make it up this way during the summer.

Todd
