Help Replacing Indicator cable
 

I have not done this repair yet and need to know if there are any tricks to doing this right. One is bad, so I am going to replace both. Its on a Bravo drive, but the manual does not address the replacement. I just don't want parts flying all over the place when I remove the large nut.

if they are merc style units you can unscrew the cap on the rear of the indicator tube where the cable enters. slide cable with black plastic end on it out. once out thee is a washer with a slit cut in it holding tension on the spring that you see against the black indicator end.
slide the spring back remove the washer, then release pressure on spring. unscrew black end, spring, cylynder ( tubular piece that centers spring in tube), and the cap.
then swap cables.
if you go to a good hardware store they should have extra deep nuts. get a 10/32 nut and attach old cable to new cable at the ends and pull thru in one shot.

good info there, i have one that black peice that slides in and out sticks at times. ??

cLEAN THE GREESE FROM THE INSIDE OF THE TUBES. if the plastic rod is still hanging up , try danding the black rods. It will someimes help. When you reassemble the indicators, use merc 101 grease. Good luck with it and MONSTAAA does give good info for those who need it.

thankyou for the props chaser. please donot take this the wrong way, but the 101 is great stuff. i use it daily for many applications. but the indicators we are speaking of typically dont like greese in the tube. it tends to attract debri like sand and salt (for salt water app's) and actually intensifies binding or slugishness. crc 656 works to help free up the mechanism but is not a cure, this would indicate there is aneed for cleaning or deburring.

There's not much one could add to Monstaaa's advice on this one. Those extra deep nuts are called 'couplers'. Neither Home Depot or Lowes had them in #10-32 when I changed all my cables a couple of years ago. Later,I found a great supply of them at Tractor Supply Co. (TSCstore.com). I wish I had them when I needed them. Pulling those cables through was one of the worst jobs I did on my boat.
