Pulling drives
 

OK, since I welded up a nice jack stand for the drive I really should use it and pull the drives.
Anyone that knows me knows the boat has sat for two years so I am mostly wanting to do this for maintenance reasons.
Greasing the short shaft as well as checking alignment.

Is there any tricks to this? I have heard the shift cable is a bear, especially going back on.
What do I need for seals, o-rings etc. ?
I hope one person do it with the jack I made?

Bravo? Take 6 nuts off the back and work it loose. It's about 100+ lbs or so and one person can do it.

An install kit is $8. Just make sure you see the shift cable go inside the mechanism on the drive and you're done. As was said to me once, "you'll only make that mistake one time."

Don't forget to unattach the speedometer pickup tube if either drive has one attached. You have to trim the drive up to disconnect it. Do that first. All the o-rings are glued in place and really do not need to be replaced if they are not loose and appear to be in good shape. I just coat them in a little white lithium grease when reinstalling the drive. Shift cable is not a big deal. Make sure once you pull the drive that the drive goes into gear and when you install the drive that it shifts back into neutral. The 6 bolts holding it in place are torqued to 50 ft. lbs.

piece of cake. The jack does all the work.. Just work it back after the six nuts come off and the trim rams. with an inch or so of clearance, you will see the cable and the shift mech sticking out.. Lift the top piece and lift the cable, it should release from the mech.. slide it back and have a cold one!

Going back on.. make sure you gently slide it on and before the cable hits, make sure the cable slides back into the mech before it hits and bends..
