Transom mount water pick up

I currently have my outdrive (IMCO shorty) picking up all the water for my engine and large external oil cooler and I want to add a transom mount water pick up to help assist with some water flow to the oil cooler.

Should I have the transom pick up feed the motor or the oil cooler? I think the big adjustable transom pick up would flow more than the outdrive so I was going to feed the engine with this pick up and let the outdrive feed the oil cooler and then dump water over the side from the outlet of the oil cooler. This should create big time flow for the oil cooler.

I have a Sea Strainer and stock water pump and circulating pump mounted to my 540 already. I never have water temp issues on the motor (160 all day long) but my engine oil temp gets up to 250 after a long run at 4500 and drops back down to 210 when crusing.

Will there be a water pressure issue with feeding the motor from the transom mount pick up? Or shold I just have hte transom pick up feed the oil cooler?

If the oil temp maxes out at 250* then it is just fine. If it climbs past 280* then should start looking at other options.

If I crusie above 4500 rpm's the oil starts to climb. The engine is set up to spin much higher but I really did not want to get over 250 or 260 on the oil temp. I'm also reading the temp at the remote oil filter and not in the pan. I'm sure if I stay in the throttle I can get the oil over 280, but thats just asking for trouble...

VH, you got time to stop by and do some aluwelding for me?

VegasHallett 04-29-2008 11:49 AM

I'm not set up for alum welding. I don't have a high feq box or a machine to do alum. I can do steel and stainless but not alum currently.

Sorry

Too bad, I was hoping you would do it for me. I have been in touch with Cantrell Welding, you know them? Or do you know anybody else in town that can do it? Don't mean to hijack the thread, I'll get it back on track...

Kim,

Pm me what you need welded and the size of the material. I have some contacts in town.

I would feed the oil cooler with the drive pick up and the engine with the hull pick up. I don't think you will have any issues with water pressure off the transom pick up, especially if you don't have them with the Imco lower.

Griff is right, the transom mounted pickup will flow huge ! the drive will be enough for your cooler.

When I put on the Whipple I went to a transom mounted pick up, as per Whipples recomendation. I did find that the transom pick up will clog with weeds and such alot easier. One down fall with them.

I have th etransom mounted pickup with a intercooler on the whipple and a 3inch oil cooler, oil never gets over 250* and that is @5300rpm
