Trim problem..drive stuck "up"
 

Today I raised my drives, and noticed the port drive wouldnt come down. After trying to get it down a few times, I noticed the hose that connects to one of the trim cylinders to the fitting under the gimbel was leaking fluid. Going to order a new hose.

My question is, would the leaking hose be my problem? The pump sounds fine. The leaky hose was the short stainless braided one that goes to the trim cylinder. TRS drive.

It could be the hose( or rather air ) fix hose make sure you have fluid if won't work ( rebuild cylinders the O rings wears and fluid bleeds by so doesn't push easy fix merc sells rebuild kits

keep in mind the cylynder has massive pressure when you trim up. but there is not even half the pressure when you trim down. so if the cylynder was left say in down position, and there was water sediment internally inside, after you trimed up, the corrosion will prevent or hinder triming down.

They were in the down position. Whats a fix for that? New Trim Cylinders?

Im gonna start by just replacing the leaky line tomorrow, and see what happens.

After I replace the line, how do I go about bleeding the system?

Replaced leaking hose today. Still didnt go down. So I unbolted the cylinders from the drive, and disconnected the hoses going to the cylinders, and they wont budge. They are stuck. Even with a block of wood and a small hammer they wouldnt budge.

Im out of ideas. Anyone?

Its time for a rebuild. Buy kit from mercruiser. Did mine last year and was easy. Open cylinders up first before buying kit. Look for scaring of cylinder bore, rust etc. If scarred save money on the kit and buy cylinder.

Im gonna take them apart tomorrow, I have a feeling there must be some rust, corrosion, etc inside. Since I just got the boat over the winter, and found the broken hose, Im guessing maybe some water got in them and now theres rust, and crud in there, plugging something up inside making them lock like this.

Just noticed also, when I looked at the end caps of the cylinders, both of the retaining rings around the shaft look a little distorted. The other drive is fine, and retaining rings look normal.

If something was sticking, or not relieving pressure, I wonder if it built up too much internal pressure and jammed the piston. Strange.

TRS cyls are notorious for the end caps sticking after
a long time in the up position
Merc trim pump specs for trimming up generate a lot more pressure than trimming down
Its how they are designed..... with the cyls stuck your pump is just bypassing
