need help with 177 blower for 525sc
need to change the gear lube on my 525sc blowers (177 weiands) . I searched and cannot find a post with the specified lub and how much for the gear sets
also. do you check the front with the plug just set in , or threaded. no info in my merc documentation that came with my boat either also. how do you change the rear reservoir? i could not feel any drail plug or see any fill. I know I saw posts before but coudl not find them thanks want to do this , this week Ramb |
I believe some guys suck the oil out of them using a turkey baster, small drill pump, etc. They dont hold much lube. I think its fill until front dipstick reads full when its not threaded in. the rear gets filled to the top of the rear fill hole.

I used 80 weight in mine, does not take much. Never had a good answer on dip stick, I used to thread in. I did use a bulb or turkey baster to draw oil out. Had a bad front bearing on one once that was pretty easy to change out w/ new from local bearing dist.

I sucked mine out using a large syringe with a piece of tubing on the end. I did this for the front and rear. The rear only has the one plug. Its a brass pipe plug on the rear of the case about half way up. Stick the tube in and suck out as much as possible then refill until it trickles out.
Use merc HP drive lube. Thats what the factory manual specs. Check the front lube level without screwing the dipistick in and just sitting on the surface. This was in the merc manual I used to have. I never kept track of the exact amount of lube that went in. It isn't very much though. Maybe about 3-4 ozs in the rear and 5-6ozs in the front. |

I collected this info over the winter researching this topic. Here's what I got:
Redline shockproof 80w-90 6-8oz Front 4oz rear Check level with the dipstick unthreaded. Ron from the blower shop Another suggestion for oil was Lucas 85-90w. Laz from Mesabalancing. I went with the shockproof because it was available. |

I would change it every 50 hrs. I only ran the Merc lube because that was what was in it and what was spec'd by Merc. Not too mention, I didn't have to worry about having something else on hand.
As long as you run a good synthetic gear lube in the 75-90wt range they should be fine. Mobil1, Amsoil or Redline. I don't know about the quantities or how a 250 gets filled or checked. It might just have fill level plugs. |
