I actually commented on this back in 2008
Not sure how many of you know this but back in the day I owned a Marina in Chicago. When the lead was first removed from pump gas I bought 1000 gallons or so of Toluene to add to one of our underground tanks to bump the octane a bit. This was a real pita so I convinced one of our suppliers to sell me 100LL. We pumped thousands of gallons every summer from that point on.. I ran it in my BAM boat pretty much exclusively back in the 80's. When I brought my boat to Ft Lauderdale for the winter one of the local fuel guys would bring a tanker to the dock. On one of the Everglades poker runs I made arrangements to fuel up at one of the helicopter tour guys down in the keys. Tunnel ram engines, 850 hp or so, I don't think 02 sensors were easy to come by back then. They were tuned on the dyno running race fuel. I never did test for the minimum octane they needed. Engines we no doubt rich by todays standards and there is about a 5% difference in the sg between 100LL and 93 octane. So I could see an engine running close having a problem. Other than that I never did and never had any reported issues from customers however things were pretty crude back then compared to today. |
