525SC Power Steering Belt

I'm looking for the Gates or equivalent part number for the 525sc power steering belt. I am particularly interested in the width. I am running a 17 width (mm I think) belt and had one on earlier closer to 14. Both squeel. I've changed everything at least once including the pump. All I can figure is I have the wrong width belt again. This is a transplanted 525sc top end setup (inluding the 525sc crank pulley) just getting running on what was originally 365hp mag engines.

I gave all my info on belt #'s to Dude Sweet when he bought my Pantera. Not sure if he still has the numbers since he sold the engine.

You could have some glzing on the pulleys causing the squealing. That or the PS pump is a little cock eyed.

The PS pump was a little KaKa, I shimmed it out today and it is perfect. I also sanded on the V groove. Same squeel exists. It does go away once it runs 1-2 minutes but in the meantime it sounds like a large POS! Any more ideas Griff? The only plays I have left are a different belt width or belt dressing which I prefer to avoid.

Send a PM to Dude Sweet. Actually, I remember that I wrote all the belt numbers on the bottom of one of the storage compartment lids under the seat in the cuddy in case I ever needed them when I was out of town. The numbers are probably still there unless he used some acetone to remove them.

If he doesn't have them, order a merc belt for triple the $$ and take it in to napa or a Gates dealer to have it measured.

any decent parts store can measure the belt you have and tell you if its a 17 or a 15 width.

You may have a problem in the system causing heavy loading on the pump at start up. Disconnect the pressure and return hoses and loop them together. If the squeal is gone, trouble shoot the system. If its still there, tighten the belt :)

Interesting Airpacker. The steering (add on external) seems to work normally at all rpm. I'll ponder that a bit. I did end up buying a new alternator because I thought that had the loading issue. BTW, I have a 17 on now and had a 15 on before. Both squeeled. What I think I will do is call an industrial supply house and see if they have one of those v groover measuring selectors. I suspect I need 15 for the 365hp pulleys and 17 for the 525 pulleys. Therefore no matter how I switch it, squeeling. It's a wonder no one on here has a 525sc they can take a look at to get the number.

Thanks for the help.

Ok, here is what I did today. Started the engine and listened to the squeal a bit. Then shot my IR temp gun around at the various v grooves. I was getting 140f on the water pump pulley power steering groove and 180f on the water pump alternator groove. Then I started the other engine and let if run a bit then measured the same grooves on the WP pulley. The were between 85 and 95F. Whala, bad circulating water pump. Should have a new one tomorrow and if it squeals too I think I'll blow my f-in head off! :hitfan:
