Oil Filter Change Tricks
I have the oil filters mounted up-side down on my motors. Anybody have any tricks on how to change these with-out getting oil all over the place?
|
Once the engine oil is warm. Shut down the engine, take screw driver and punch a hole in the top of the filter so the oil drains back down into the pan.
When you spin off the filter, a little oil will be in mount under the filter but it shouldn't spill. |
rags and bilge cleaner mine are horizontal I think some engineer at mercury gets a big laugh out of their riggings

trick
put a hole in the top of it, and make sure you go past the check valve... works every time!
|
Make sure you use the filters without that stupid valve that keeps the oil from draining OUT of the filter.....those just let a filter full drain everywhere when you unscrew the filter.
|
Some one makes an adapter that mounts between the filter housing and filter that has a drain cock.
|
As long as you aren't runnign filters with the anti drain back valve all you have to do is crack them and they will drain on their own. Losen it about a turn and you will hear and feel it "glugging" just leave it for about 5 minuits while you suck the engine oil and then they will not make any mess at all.

I take a plastic grocery bag and stick it over my horizontal filters and get very little spillage .....
|
Cut the bottom of an old plastic 1 gal. milk jug, duct tape cap on, unscrew filter and drop into milk jug.
