Crane 731 cam guys

Have you guys seen any piston to valve clearance problems on a stock engine with these things? I'm going to check when I bolt the heads on the shortblock (454 gen VI) tomorrow but was just curious what to expect. I wasn't sure if these things generally have mountains of piston to valve so nobody concerns themselves with it or if I should be expecting to flycut the pistons. Any feedback?

Ran a 731 in a 502 for years. Should not be a problem. And pistons already should have a relief in them.

They do have a relief in them, and I'm using stock sized valves but just wasn't sure what people have been getting away with. I guess I will check it tomorrow just to make sure. I just thought someone may have been down this route already and would say, well I saw x amount of lift with y amount of clearance...

Anyways, thanks

That cam has .587 of lift on the intake side. You don't need to worry until you are near .700 of lift.

Thanks. I actually checked it just to be sure so I'll post the results as I'm sure someone will go down this same route later. I used the standard method...TDC'd the motor and checked 10° btdc and 10° atdc. The intake had .120" and the exhaust had mountains of clearance so I didn't make mental note (over .250"). This is with stock size valves and stock longblock. Hope it helps...
