Oil pump, HV or standard?
I rebuilt my engines, I hurt the port engine last weekend, I am pulling it, starboard is fine but I did use a standard volume oil pump in both engines I get about 50 psi at 3000 rpm, 40-45 at idle cold, I have not got a good reading at 4-5000 with a mechanical gauge, the boat still has stock gauges that are not great,
I figure since I am pulling the port engine to rebuild should I pull the starboard to put in a HV oil pump? some say I need it others say no, they are mild 454 origionally 420 hardware, TRS with oil coolers (blade style) I think i am OK with standard volume but want more opinions.. Clearances are 2.5-3 on mains and 1.8-2.2 on rods if I can rember right.. |

take it from me, standard volumn-standard pressure...only cost me $7000 to learn that

Standard. The HV pump can suck a stock pan dry.

If those clearances are correct and you are running a stock pan you should be good with std pump. Your oil pressure seems to be good. One thing I might add if you can get the melling select better pump with the few extra bucks.

I have 8 qt oil pans with traps and baffles, made by Hamburger

kreskin says .... hmmm......... overpressured and exploded the oil filter gasket with the usual disaster to follow soon after...
but thats just a guess |
the high volume works well with larger pans....stock...std pump

i have the 14 qt milodon pans and it was overpressurizing the pan gaskets, it even blew the miloden stainless braided racing dipstick tube gaskets out.. had to pull the motors 3 times ,but never caused any engine damage just a lot of bilge cleaning, started with high volumn-high pressure, had 75 lbs at idle and 100 lbs around 5950 rpms..tried standard pressure high volumn that lowered it to 60 lbs at idle and 80 lbs at power, then used the standard/standard, got me down to 50 idle and 75 at power.. each time another pump included another fel pro gasket, pump ,pick-up and weld...it would pump a gallon per motor per day..
