power steering pump replacement
 

Anyone know how to get a crossover pump model number from mercury.They have a price of 500.00 for there pumps look like saginaws to me. Where are pump id numbers located .Replacement pump number is 71317a20

we took our power steering pump to local parts house and they matched it up with a rebuilt pump for around $75 and it worked fine on a 22 ft eliminator daytona with a 598 quad whipple engine. no problems.

thats what Im thinking, $500 vs $75 why piss it away.Rather buy gas!

You can swap the guts out of it to your reservoir if need be.

you can do that no problem, if it does not feel right, change the large fitting that the pressure line screws into along with valve and spring right behind it, easy change, thats the pressure regulator and pretty much the only diff in the pumps internally, Rob

A pump for an 85 Chev 3/4 ton Truck will be very close. That's what I am using. You also can get the reman pump from AutoZone and just switch out the housing with your Mecury housing like others have suggested. You would never know the difference.

If you are replacing a worn out Mercury pump switch out the valve in the back for the valve in the reman. If you are starting from scratch drill out the orfice to up the flow closer to the Mercury pump. I think the drill size to use is 11/64, but you might want to check. I have it written down at home.

I was guessing 1986 ish style,I am going to play around with them tomorrow.My pumps are painted merc blue and have welded caps for the tanks. I want to know if the allen bolt is left or right hand thread? Is the pully a press on or keyed?

Not sure, but I don't think that is an allen bolt, but a way of holding the pump shaft. Pulley should just be a press fit. Get the pulley remover/installer from AutoZone.
I've also done the automotive pump swap into my housing to keep the correct return hose location.

Before you go and change your pump you ought to try some Lucas Oil Power steering pump rejuvenator. Comes with a 100% guarantee and the stuff works. I took my old boat out right after dropping in a new engine and forgot to put in power steering fluid. smoked the pump. Figured I had to replace it and tried the Lucas Oil power steering fluid after the guy at NAPA said this stuff works. I could not believe it but the pump was like new afterwords and I did not have to rreplace the pump. Might save you a lot of work.
