Vats shut down at machine shops

I called around to several machine shops and they have shut off their vats and heat treating ovens due to the cost of natural gas. I found one shop that wanted $250.00 to vat and blast my block. I guess it is time to break out my pipe brushes and oven cleaner and start cleaning. Anyone have satisfactory results cleaning out the flaking rust in water jackets at home?

Just my opinion, but if you are rebuilding the engine It would be wise to have it as clean as you can get it.. :) Jamie

The oven cleaner wrinkled up and removed all the over coat someone sprayed on, but did not touch the oem paint. I used oven cleaner and my pressure washer for a couple of hours on it today. I got 95% of the loose rust out of the water jackets. Next I will be doing some polishing in the lifter valley and around the main webbing. I still have a few more days to come up with a solution, or pay out the nose for something that used to cost 40 bucks.
