water problem on 454
on a 1991 454 the impeller went and he ran it dry for a bit and it burnt thru one of the exhaust boots from elbow to y pipe, anyhow i replaced the boots and put a new impeller kit in it with housing and all, (by the way the new housing was a solid plastic one with the hose adapters built on it and the one i took off was a 2 peice plastic housing and a metal top with the hose adapters on it) any how when i hook it up on a hose i cant get any water out the exhaust nor does it look like it is taking any water in. pulled the circulator pump and all looked good with that. what else can it be also repulled the impellar and still looks fine.
thanks rick |
Back flush from the T stat. Are you sure you have the hoses on right?
|
did you put the hoses back on wrong??the hose from the transom is on top...
|
one of my guys did the work on it so im not sure, but i asked him the same question if the hoses are back on right. the housing on this one has the hoses side by side not top and bottom but they are marked Lh out and rh out witch one is the heavy transom hose.
|
is the housing outlet marked lh out or rh out the side for the heavy transom hose. if the hoses were on backward would it wipe the impeler.
|
I have done this before...swap the hoses around. Looking down at the pump I "beleave" the right side goes to transom and the left side to cooler. I am at work so I cannot look at my setup. But this is easy mix up when going to the "new" style pump bodies. Like I said, I did the exact same thing first time I swapped mine over. And of course while hoses are off, backflush cooler just in case it has not been done.
|
And make sure you prime the pump and try to fill the intake hose with water before putting it back on. Sometimes you'll get an air pocket and the pump won't prime.

It is a left hand engine, so you want the hose that comes out of the pump and goes to the cooler to hook up to that port. The hose coming from the gimble goes to the other port( the one marked RH out). That is the outlet for an engine that turns opposite rotation.
As has been mentioned, make sure you backflush the hoses to remove all of the old pieces of impeller. If the impeller came completely apart, it all went through the cooling system. It will not all pass through the cooler and will get stuck in the cooling system. Some will make it all the way to the exhaust, so be sure to check for any impeller pieces there. Hope this helps, Eddie. |
More than likely the new impeller is now toast also.
Is it a Merc part??? I have read where several people have had problems with Sierra stuff on initial start up. |
thanks guys. and yes griff it is a siera aftermarket
|
I've used merc and sierra housings and impellers, there all a toss up, once you get this problem figured out, buy a complete waterpump kit to keep in the boat because you just don't know how long it will last. I installed one of those blue neopreme impellers and so far it works great.
