454 thrown rod....need to upgrade
 

Buddy threw a rod in his port 454 mag. 94 model, 385hp. I dont know anything about the 454s. Looking to rebuild the bad motor and then tear into both and get some more power. He is at 69 ish mph right now and would like 80 after its said and done. Anybody have a package deal on these motors to upgrade them? Any ideas or somebody to speak with that can point him in the right direction?

I also have a pretty good 468 upgrade kit that I can send you. Have had real good luck with it in the past. Both engines will require an exhaust upgrade if it hasn't been done all ready.

you are going to have to make well over an additional 100 hp PER motor to even get close to the speeds you are talking about
at which point everything else you have is going to become marginal. do yourself a favor and buy a couple of nice injected 502 mpi takeouts from someone and just swap them out. youll save a bunch of money and end up boating this summer instead of reinventing the wheel with your old iron.

You can do 100 per with just an upgrade to a 468 and some exhaust.

so... he takes a 385 hp 454 adds 14 cubic inches and an exhaust system and suddently makes 500 hp ?


ohhhh you meant the 468 with different heads and cam, and another point or two of compression ... and then add the forged crank and rods ............

like some whole other motor 468...

his numbers suggest about 1050 to 1100 hp to get that boat to 80

no clapped out beater 454 rebuilds are likely to do that without simply lifting up the valve covers and sliding some other motor underneith them.


but, of course thats just a guess on my part.

I don't have any idea about what you are calculating. I did mean yes, you would need a cam and head swap, and yeas bump up the comp a little.

But, I thought that would have been obvious to anyone with your expertise in power to weight ratios, and advanced hydrodynamics to calculate boat speed.

Once you are all ready rebuilding the engine anyway. It is only a few dollars more in parts, labor stays the same, to build a stronger 454. It doesn't really matter what the over bore is.

It sounded from the first post that he was on a budget.

Anyway, I will get off of your thread now since it appears that there is a know - it - all that wants to wear the big britches in here.

I always thought it took about 15hp to gain a mph......this guys boat is an older 32 baja. Heavy and straight. He can gps at 69 right now. With close to 500hp crockett 454's he should be close to 80.....I would think. And yes, this is a budget deal and it would be nice to keep the same motors so he doesnt have to mess with anything else like mounts, guages, etc.

Does a thrown rod usually mess anything up in the block itself?
