I just bought a 500 hp and was wondering were to start with getting more power out of it. So if someone could give me some pointers and what to do that would be great. Thanks Jeramy
Also what prop should i use? I have a 25 outlaw running a bravo one drive a 23p mirage plus 3 blade. |

I am not sure it is carbed and is the one that is on here for 8500.00 like the 8 th one down in the classifieds motor section

AFR heads and a camshaft from Rmbuilder.:drink:
|
741 crane cam, dominator carb and port the heads.
|
If it's a Gen VI, I'd go with the stock carb and intake, AFR 315 CNC'd heads, Crane 168741, 1.8 Crane Golds on the intake and 1.7 Crane gold rockers on the exhaust, new lifters, Isky valve springs, CMI Elbow tops, and a HVH 1" Super Sucker carb spacer....620+ Ask me, I've got 2!

First place to start is heads. Either port the stock ones, Or buy new aluminum heads. Then cam it up !
|
OK as for the heads which is the best for my motor and were do i purchase as with the cam. I think the only problem that i am gonna run into is that i just bought a set emi exhaust and i am pretty sure they do not recommend beefing up the cam.
If you guys could link me to some decent places to find this stuff that would be great and roughly how much is this gonna cost? Thanks to all of you that are taking time out to help a fellow boater out |
Pm rmbuilder tell him what you have and he will make you a cam . The price was $375 for the stick. :cool-smiley-011:

Amen, call RMBuilder. Bob will set you up with no BS and will stick with you through the whole project. I have 2 600 hp reworked carb 500 hps with Bob's heads, cams, etc. Great torque and picked up 10 mph in the boat.

Well i guess its unanimous AFR is the winner so now i guess what would be the best candidate for my motor i will be doing heads and cam and carb. I plan on starting my project at the end of the season. Once again thanks to all that have chimed in.
Now its time to fire up the merc and meet my buddies out on the lake. Hope everybody has a safe sober day boating well sober if driving thanks jer |

$ depends on what you are starting with. Completely stock carb 500 hp's, Anodized AFR heads with ss intake valves, inconel exh valves, springs, etc./camshafts/lifters, I changed carbs another guy did not, he worked the stock merc blue carbs. I put crane ignitions on to be able to raise the rev limiters, used same Gil exhaust. Peak hp 595 at 5500 rpm. Peak torque at 615 lbft at 4200 rpm. I left some hp on the table to keep rpms down to 5500. Other folks run up to 5800-6000 rpm with more hp. None of the parts from the stock 500 hp heads were used for the afrs so it does get expensive. I rebuilt both motors and replaced the intakes (corrosion issue) also did a bunch of other work so I spent a bunch but the boat is a beast now. |

Search for RMBuilder for his user profile. I don't have his number handy.

Get an alignment tool and make sure the engine / drive is not in a bind. Blueprint the bottom also. Cheap stuff for speed.

My rough costs:
Anodized AFR Heads ss intake, inconel exh, titanium retainers, springs, cups, head studs $3,000/set (I bought the bare 305cc AFRs with the CNC chamber, RMBuilder selected the components.) Custom cam $450 per side (RM Builder) Morel Lifters $450 (RM Builder) Intake pushrods ~$100 HI6M Ignition $250 plus $75 for wire/mounts etc each side Edelbrock Victor Jr. Intake $220 plus $75 for powdercoat Carb $900 each 1" spacer ($20 each) Gaskets, RTV, Shop supplies, Beer $500 per motor Dyno $300 cash (2 sessions) so $600 Freshen motor (clean, hone, inspect block, polish crank, Make rod ends round, rings, bearings, assemble heads and short block $1,000 per at a machine shop) Closed loop cooling for aluminum heads ($1100 per) I pulled the motors, assembled the long block, took to dyno twice, did the tech work at the dyno, installed in boat, etc. I did not have to modify my stock 500 HP fuel system. Like I said, not cheap and I did all the grunt work. Hope this helps. |
Oh, BTW I changed bolts to stainless where it made sense, ARP intake, exhaust, some of the bell housing, some of the motor mount, all bracket bolts, oil pan bolts. Probably $200/motor.
I also did not have to modify the oil cooler or lines. Fuel and oil system add another $1000 per. Don't underestimate how expensive these projects can be, there are a LOT of hidden costs in a project like this. |
Hey thunderstruck thanks for the list that helps out. Now that i can see some numbers i no what i am getting into. See i am trying to decide if i wanna do a blower or motor work?
It looks to be relatively close in price maybe a little more for the heads and cam. But if the gains are close to the same i will just do the motor work. and keep reliability. Does any one have any input i on blower or do the heads and cam? Once again thanks to every one for chiming in you guys here at offshore have been a huge help. Jeramy |
Where are you guys finding the AFR heads that are anodized?
And would you still need the closed cooling since they are anodized? |

And would you still need the closed cooling since they are anodized? TP Marine, AFR anodized heads, use to be 10% discount for OSS members. Might want to call. RM Builder is also an AFR dealer and can get the same. http://www.tpmarine.com/index.asp?Pa...OD&ProdID=1383 |
Still in need of some help with prop should i try 24 or 26 pitch? for 1998 baja with bravo 1 and a 500hp. If anyone can help me that would be great.
