Boat Headers why so expensive?

Why do they cost so much more than a car?

Vinny P 07-10-2008 06:57 PM

#1.. They are for a boat.
#2.. They are double walled made from stainless.
#3.. See #1..

Hell I rented a set last week for $500

Chris Sunkin 07-11-2008 08:43 AM

It's a matter of perspective. Go buy FAA certified parts for aircraft if you want to see what expensive looks like. Or maybe try visiting the parts counter at the Ferrari dealership.

The thing is, we've gotten used to cheap goods from China. That makes something well-made and made in the USA look out-of-whack. Bending double-tube stainless steel is far from fast or easy. Making them last in high-heat, high vibration applications isn't an easy trick either.

For most, manifolds are a better bet. Good one's give up little to tube headers and unless you're running tractor headers, you're nowhere close to proper collector length anyway.

Anytime ANYTHING becomes truly "overpriced", someone starts producing an equivalent product for less. If there was millions to be made in marine exhausts, Stellings would have many competitors. And remember, CMI came from somewhere.

Boat Headers

Profit Is Not A Dirty Word

Airpacker 07-11-2008 10:44 AM

beauty set of polished full length tube in tube stainless headers = $5,000.00

Little chunk of shiny rock mouinted in 100 bucks worth of gold on wife's finger = $5000.00

Which one is "expensive"? Which would you prefer to shell out 5 grand for?

Headers will never argue with you. Headers will never cheat on you. Headers will never try to boss you around. Headers will never try to "change" you. Headers will never take half of what you own.

In summary, headers are cheap. :)

Yeah, but the rest of what they're bolted to sure will.

Buy her the ring on the stipulation that she has to buy you the headers. In the end YOU spent the same $$ and you both got what you wanted. Otherwise you have to listen to her b!tch and nag about how you wasted all your deniro on your stupid boat when you should have been thinking of her....yawn.

......OH, and they arent entitled to half as long as you never say I do. ;)

Fortunately, my other half of nearly 20 yrs understands completely that boating costs plenty O dollars and never complains. Besides, boating is how we met in the first place. Therefore, me spending 25 grand on a motor should be considered "romantic" shouldn't it :)

You wouldn't believe what stainless tubing costs these days. The tubing alone is half of the cost of the headers. Btw Chris Sunkin, why do you have Elton John as your avatar? :D:evilb:

Chris Sunkin 07-12-2008 07:59 AM

Elton's real name is "Reginald". Think about it.

Turbojack 07-12-2008 12:23 PM

I had bought the wife a set of boat headers for Christmas. When she opened the boxes she asked "What am I going to do with these?" I told her there was a boat in the garage that they would fit on. Now when we are at the lake she will show people what I bought her for Christmas.

I have CMI e-tops. Just wondering would I notice much of a difference going to big tube headers? I once spoke to CMI and they said since I already had this set that the difference wouldn't be worth the price?

mookymonkey 07-15-2008 04:29 AM

that is the reason stainless marine dry exhaust is so popular. performance without the headaches and price. i put them on my engine over the winter. no regrets. .02

Good advice. You could find more performance in many other areas with that money. For a header to work truly well- for it to have maximum scavenging effect on the cylinders, you must have a properly tuned collector. Unless your thru-hull pipes are 8" OD, you're giving away power. If your collectors are 4' long or if one side is 3' and the other is 7' (staggered) you're giving away power. Hence the "tractor" headers.

Side by side, there's not much difference between a manifold like the Eickert or the Stainless than there is a tube header like a CMI. All because of collector length.
