Lower shift cable replacement....How hard?
 

Ok I have a cable that has rubbed up against the coupler and skinned it back a good bit....still works fine and easy but it needs to be replaced, I have the y pipes back there for exhaust and room is kind of tight. Is it a difficult job? and if not how long to do and are there some good instructions anywhere?

i think theres a merc tool you need for this, to get it adjusted properly, its only like a 10 dollar tool, never done it, but at a glance it doesnt seem to bad

just did mine, but engine was out for me, no special tools, pull the drive, remove the nut holding the cable therecut the boot off(get the cable/boot kit) unhook inside and remove the end snake it out, not to bad...Rob

If it is a Bravo drive, job isn't too bad. Remove drive, disconnect cable from shift plate, loosen clamp on cable belows at transom plate, undo nut on outside at gimbal end, push everthing ahead enough to clear gimbal, then pull everything out. When installing the new cable, it is easiest if you have the little plastic spacer to align and adjust everything at the shift plate. Also, slide the bellows on with grease from the plain end before feeding it thru the transom plate. The cable, bellows and gaskets and "o"rings come as a kit.
