If you are tearing up ring gears, I suspect you have a starter shimming issue.

THANKS AIR PACKER
I had this motor shipped across country from CA. it fell of the block under motormount shifted foward and landed on the starter and after the ring gear went it was descovered that the starter bolts were bent. finding this i was comftorable with that. Now three days later the same problem

Rich,
Are you using the correct starter bolts ? The correct ones have a "shoulder" that sits in the recessed hole in the block and keeps the atarter from shifting position. If you just use a plain 3/8" bolt, the starter can move. Also, there is a procedure to check and shim the starter. Is this a "normal" GM starter, or a mini starter ?

sometimes the starter bolts are just a little too long and you need to put a washer underneath. Be sure to check for proper length.....
