stellings box

Hello All,

I have read the differences between imco and stellings boxes it's like ford and chevy. The bottom line is I don't want to raise the engine and the stellings has that opinion but I heard that from someone that the stellings box with destroy the upper gears in the drive , this I believe because the straight shaft would get more horizontal forces on the gear then the ujoints. Has anyone had problems with eithter of these boxes . any information would be helpful. Thanks alec

No stellings-box related problems at all. 1999 35 Fountain lightning.

actually the harmonics of the solid hub travel thru and destroy the uppers, compared to the imco or merc its units.

13+ years racing and pleasure with Stealings boxes and no broken drive issues. I do use a Drive Saver (rubber absorbtion unit between flywheel and drive shaft). We also never had more than a 2 degree vertical angle and 0 degree horizonal angle on the drive shaft. IMO, retro-fitting any boat with boxes is a major expense to rig correctly for limited performance gains. Be prepared to reposition the engines, new steering, new tail pipes, etc. It also takes a good degree of talent to accurately align the drive shafts, etc.

Thanks

Cat,
The DRIVESAVER is round disc is approx 6" X 1" and made of a hard rubber type material with a specific torque rating. They have threaded inserts to accept the drive shaft flange and counter sunk holes to allow bolting thru the flywheel into the crankshaft.
For marine use, they are primarily used in an inboard cruiser application. This company uses limited distribution, but Teague used to stock the model you would want for a connection between a drive shaft and the crank. My notes say: MRD 504 PR 1200-1600 Ft/Lbs torque. www.globalrubberworks.com

Woops...company sold. New owner Globe Composite Solutions, Inc. www.kfgi.com/pages/products_drivesaver

Oh...the Drivesaver is also mounted top to the 8 lb alum flywheel that ruins bearings and causes a poor idle:rolleyes:
