Generator, to keep of get rid of?

In my Formula, it has a old 6.5KW onan mounted in the bilge, right in front of the engines, behind the rear bench. It doesnt work, and needs to be rebuilt. I am debating whether to have it rebuilt over the winter, or just take it out and leave it out. i figure it has to weigh 600+lbs with the generator, muffler, etc. Boat already has alum heads, and headers, so that helped take some weight off the stern. Im thinking 600+ lbs off the stern should help a bit in performance? Obviously its a heavy boat as it is, but considering it has alum heads, headers, and removal of the generator, should be close to knocking 1k lbs of dead weight off the stern from factory setup.

The boat does have a/c, but the only time it would be used is if I am in a slip overnighting using shorepower. So i cant say that i would get much use out of it.

If you dont think you would use it, its a no brainer....It will make a nice anchore.

you could remove it and get one of the Honda 2000 watt sets and when you need it you could store it on the same mount? Most run them out of the engine room on the platform but I have seen them mounted in the engine room ...be safe though ......m

Buy a new one and sell the old one on ebay.

Generator and AC on the open water is awesome. :ernaehrung004:

Not sure whats wrong with mine till i get it out of there. Tried to get it running and oil was puking out of the oil fill. who knows, cracked cylinder, broken rings, etc. Probably sat for a long time without use. I guess i could always fix it/replace it and make use of the fridge, microwave, tv, and a/c while at anchor.

I doubt its 600#'s. Thats the weight of a SBC engine.

If you don't use it and it doesn't work, I'd take it out. Have it rebuilt over the winter and go from there.

Mild Thunder, do you still have the 990 heads for sale ? If so, are they from a 420 ?

MILD THUNDER 09-05-2008 06:02 PM

yes, they are off a 420HP 454. The GM square ports. They are my buddies, he switched to ovals. I think he wants 500 per set, they are complete.

KEEP IT !!!!!!!

Its not like the weight is going to give you a bunch more mph.

This way I can jump on your boat at the beach with the a/c cranked !!!!!
