Bent propshaft...

I have a bent propshaft on a Volvo Penta, I am trying to figure out how this happened, my prop is fine and I don't recall hitting anything, what else could cause this?

Duo-prop or single? How much horsepower do you have?

Are the splines straight or twisted?

splines are straight.

Okay, now we're getting somewhere!

Obviously you have stainless steel propellers or the aluminum one would be all banged up from an impact that would bend a shaft.

Does the skeg show any sign of an impact? I have seen a SS prop take a hit and not leave any noticeable evidence of damage until it was put in a pitch block...and then it was pretty obvious.

Could the shaft have been previously bent from another operator or owner and nobody noticed?

Usually if contact is made while running, the splines get twisted. Could the propeller have touched bottom and the weight of the boat bent the shaft?
