Brass, copper fittings in Stainless strainers?
Is it OK to use brass or copper fittings in a stainless sea strainer? Any dissimilar metal issues?
I have a tough tiime finding stainless, 1 1/4 NPT thread to water/hose barb pipe fittings. |
Brass is the gold standard for breaking the dissimilar metals chain. That's what you use on connections between steel & copper. But you're going to rubber anyway so it doesn't matter.

Thx..
Teage sea strainers. SST./chrome... 1 1/4 Female NPT.. I need a male hose barb to go into the strainer so I can clamp the hoses to it. I found copper, for 1" hose. Found brass for 3/4' hose. Can't find stainless anywhere. Macmaster and Carr has something but I can't be sure it's a 1 1/4" NPT thread. |

Thanks Mark,,, Those might work ok, I was trying to get stainless.. I remember your boat... saw it in the oso adds, and I see the price is better now. :)
You got to take that beast out.. Let me know when.. I might join you for a run or something. |
If you're screwing stainless into stainless, use a good liquid teflon pipe thread sealant or the bronze-based anti-seize. Or both. They may not gall going in, but they probably will coming out.

Probably be out this weekend, weather looks good

Are you sure that is 1 1/4 thread? Typically the strainers are built with 1" NPT which happens to be close to 1 1/4 OD (standard merc sea pump inlet size).
We normally buy 6" x 1" npt nipples, put them in the lathe chamfer and turn down enough room for double clamps leaving a lip on the end. That way we get 2 fittings per nipple. |
