Interior v.s. exterior steering mounts?
 

Hi guys,
Thinking about rear hydraulic steering over the winter. I have side by side engines in my 38 Scarab and TRS drives. What are the pros and cons regarding where to mount the hyd. cylinders. (between the drives or on the outside). Thanks in advance. - Jeff

If you're not going over 65 MPH, it's probably a waste of money. A good-working cable system with hydraulic assist will do the job just as well.

if you do go hydraulic, it doesn't really matter where you mount the cylinders- it's purely a rigging issue- are there any interference points?

No interference points; boat maybe does 67-69 tops; just wanted the security since my tillers/gimbals/whatever are sloppy. I can get cylinders (used) for less than $200 total - my machine shop can build the drive mounting plates (if I have a photo or pattern) for cheap - maybe $250 in hydraulic lines? - helm (not sure about this) - pump (can I use my Merc power steering pump/) Seems like it might pencil out to less that $1500. Whaddya think? - Jeff

I found out that the length of my cylinders dictated that I had to go to the outside of my TRS drives. I actually am going to use a closed helm pump system and remove my power steering pump. (Capilano or Hynautic I have both) I like my friends Hynautic pump system and you still have steering when the engine with the pump fails. I made my wingplates and my transom mounts at work and the local Parker shop that my work uses sold me 2-25' and 4-3' 3000 psi hoses and fittings for $58. I have less than $1000 into the who system thats with 2 Marine Machine cylinders off of e-bay for $600.
