intake manifold gaskets
 

I remover my intake manifold yesterday and notest that the stock manifold gaskets blocked off the front water passageway on one side and the back on the other side. The new set of gasket both sides are open. Should i use the flow throu type or the blocked off type.

both should be open in the front. Someone put one on backwards. I've never seen solid rear hole gaskets before.

You are correct. I set the heads on the work bench the way they go on the engine, they are closed on the belling housing end and open on the circuleing pump end.Still my question is what gasket do i use open or closed in the rear?

both sides of the intake gasket need to be open in the front..Rob

You did not mention what type of engine you are working on but .... if you look at the intake manifold, I bet that there is no water passage across the back, so there is no need for a hole there, even though most gaskets will have it. Only thing I can figure is you are working on a small block Chevy and someone used a set of the gaskets for a mid 80's tbi setup which did have a coolant pasage across the back and the gaskets had a restrictor plate in the rear holes.

What exactly are you working on ??
