502 carb intake selection
I was told that the edelbrock Rpm Air gap intake is not a good choice for a gen6 502 with over 540 Hp. What is a good standard deck single plane intake for this type carb engine. and does anyone have a used one kicking around. Thanks alec

The 500 HP Merc came with a Dart single plane. Dart, Brodix, Edelbrock Victor Jr would all work fine for that setup. I just bought a dart on ebay for $200 for mine.

I disagree, in the rpm range that we run these engines all the dyno pulls I've seen show the dual plane intakes does better, the single planes give up a lot of torque thruout the range and don't come on until the rpm range is way about the 5-6 grand max that we turn...Rob

We just ordered World Merlin Intakes with brass lined water passages for our hp500's .:drink:

Edelbrock Vic Jr. got me 10 hp over Dart single plane 5 more with a 1" spacer on dyno.
Vic Jr.s are $244.95 NEW in Summit catalog then have powercoated. Compare to 399.95 for DART new. |
World's Merlin intake with brass inserts are the way to go in salt water- just make sure you use the correct intake gaskets. The Merc and Felpro gaskets have openings that are larger than the brass insert. JMO- Rick

The air gap would probably be better in the low and midrange for your HP range. If you want to be able to get every bit of hp on top, the go with the Merlin.

502 ci (Merc 500HP carb short blocks), 305cc AFR heads, RM Builder custom cams, 5500 rpm 605 hp uncorrected, 595 hp corrected. Peak torque 615 lbft at 4200 rpm or so. With the Vic Jr. and the 1" phenolic spacer.
30" labbed Bravo 1's went from 81 to 91 mph with nose cones on the drives. |
