Drive options for a 38 T/S Top Gun

Hey all,
A friend of mine blew an outdrive his last time out. He wanted me to ask / find out what options are out there. He is running, I beleive Xr's with sport masters. He was questioning if he should go with shortys or not. Any one have some real world experince with this set up & hull. And No Scotty, we are not putting dry sump 6's on it :)
Thanks,
Jr.

that set up should have short sport masters on it all ready. Does it have ITS on it or a standerd transom shield?

Honestly, It just may have shorts on it. That I am unsure of. However, I do know it does not have the ITS.

What broke on the drive? If it broke something in the lower (vertical shaft is a common break), an IMCO lower(shorter or standard) would be a good choice since it has much stronger shafts that are torsional(they will twist and give and not break)

Young,
Thanks for the reply.................... If the vertical shaft is beefed up then what becomes the next weakest link?

The short vertical shaft in the upper. For that, I use an upper vertical from Max Machine Works. I think they are the only ones that make that shaft that is torsional. Being torsional is the key to stop it from breaking. I also always put a good top cap on to stop any flexing. I like the cap from Billet Marine. It is cnc alum. and has an internal shower in it.

My bud was intersted in trying to increase speed since he has to spend the money. Plus, if he upgraded, fixing the drives he has now for spares could be a plus if there is some mph to gain.
