speed hungry

I have a 28' 1985 baja with twin 454's. These motors have dart high rise intakes, roller rockers, roller valves, a big cam(not sure on model #), EMI prefomance exhaust system. i was thinking my boat should be running at least middle 70's.. best ive seen out of it is 65mph on gps. any ideas? any more mods i can do to the engines for more horsepower or top end speed?? Im running 4 blade 24 pitch props... Ive considered stepping up a few pitches but don't really want to.

Go to the Baja thread and ask Jason Smith. He has a 29' Baja with 454's he has done a lot of work on. He might be able to help you out.

something somewhere is not right, you have more hp in one motor than I do in both, 3 feet more boat than I do and only 15 mph faster plus I have ugly bottom paint. were your motors dialed in when you built them? are you running the rpm you should be at wot?

DareDevil 10-29-2008 09:52 PM

What RPM do u run and what gear ratio on the drives ?

Hope there not TRS .

With bravos the boat should run easy 75+ with 450 HP each.

Unless you're at high alititude, 24" props sound small for that power package, but we need more info. Drive type and ratio please.

ezstriper 10-30-2008 06:49 AM

I agree we need more info rpm, gear ratio, etc...but some of those baja hulls are just slow !!!! dosen't matter how much power you throw at them...sorry...Rob

how heavy is your boat? another question: are the motors stock expect for the upgrades? the Big Cam could be a issue if they are too big?

4 Blades on that old of a boat probably isn't helping.

Back then, they had the drives set pretty deep,
and they work best with 3 blades ( for top end)

I'd try a set of 23 pitch Mirage's and see how it runs
first.

There is a guy over on MWBP ( Hi-tech Redneck)
that has a 280 that he's gotten to run in the low
90's, ( bigger power, short lowers, etc)
so yes, you can make them run.

The boat is a floating brick by todays standards. It will take a lot of power to move it. A friend of mine has twin 700hp's in his older 28 Baja and he has seen 92 or so. It's about a '90 and has Bravo's with shorties. There were no bravo's in 85. Also, without some real info on the engines, they might be only be making 350hp. Another freind has stock 330's in an older 28 Baja with Alphas and ran about 62mph.
