Another would be the crank. As I understand it, they started with a cast crank way back and then upgraded to steel. Then, went back to cast. Best to check your number with Merc to be for sure. We found one in mine that according to protocol would not have been steel but in fact was steel.
Also, they used the heavy duty Gates hoses on the oil cooling systems on later models. And, I got called out once on the older style fuel coolers. My original from a 2003 serial number had a honey comb type. But some of them also had the flow-around type with no honey comb. Further, some of them had cast manifolds and some had aluminum. Also, there were two different sized OD heat exchangers. There were also two different style oil coolers too. Same size but one was simple in and out for water and then like mine has the extra vertical feed coming up out of it to the bottom of the exhaust for the water dump system (if applicable). I'm still thinking. |
There's also two different designs on the ignition coils along with two slightly different valve covers.
As previously mentioned, there are two types of manifolds but also one has a water rail (older) and another does not have the water rail (newer). I'm not sure if this is related to cast vs. aluminum or not.. Don't forget some of them had DTS with different PCM files. Also, there is an analog harness and a digital harness. OM095325 was the upper serial number range. Below this number is obviously the lower range but be careful cause depending on which line item you refer to, the serial number ranges vary greatly. The high and low that I posted are not the "only" highs and lows... Also, the throttel body will be different with DTS or Mechanical. |
