Cam Too rough ?
 

I'm warming my 87' 454 with the Edelbrock top end kit, ( alum. heads, intake, 750 carb and cam ) The cam seems alittle big anyone have an opinion on it. duration 300 in./ 306 exh. @.050" 240 in./ 246 exh. lift@ valve .560 in. / .573 exh. @ cam .330 in. / .337 exh. lobe sep angle 112 intake centerline 110 not looking for big horsepower, just some with weight saving.

Its definately on the edge of being too large. Also, it might revert water without some very good exhaust dumping water way at the back.

any suggestions on a good grind

What exhaust do you have????? The cam you listed is a flat tappet cam, right???? Do you want to spend the $$$ to upgrade to a roller cam/lifters???

Much too big. It will revert gallons of water and run like a dog below 6000 rpm. Try this one http://www.cranecams.com/?show=brows...tType=camshaft With a wet exhaust system, this is about as big as you can go. if you get the Edelbrock heads, they will make the cam seem bigger because they flow so well. I would also go with the 110cc chamber option because the compression on those old engines was very low, right around 8.0 to one.

A 454cid engine with that cam duration seems awefully big for for an engine destined for marine use. You're going to have a very soggy bottom for sure and may even have troubles keeping the engine running at idle speeds---especially when trying to manuver around the docks, boat traffic, wind and water currents. Heck, I know of guys using cams that size in 540cid engines---and my 565's don't even have cams that size.

As others have said its too big. Since your not looking for every last hp...the smaller 290cc of those heads still work quite nicely with shorter lift cams (less spring = more hours and reliability, and less in upgraded parts) For all practical puposes, a 224 intake lobe on a 454 marine motor would easily spin to 5200rpm...I don't think you want to go higher than that w/o some additional upgrades. Thanks for all the input, I have the 110cc Edelbrock heads and am collecting parts for the rebuild, Edelbrock listed that marine cam with their top end kit and doing alot off ideling at no wake speeds it looked like trouble. I will continue to do my research with all your advice. ( I'm using the stock style GIL aluminum exhaust )

For a flat tappet cam off the shelf, go with the one Patriyacht listed or the Crane 134241/ cam kit #134242. The second one is less $$$ and I used it in 454mag with Imco Exhaust.

If you want to spend the extra $$$(prob about $800-1000 extra) go with a Crane 731 roller cam.
