575 sci's

What does Merc recomend for fuel for 575's? I am getting a pair and 93 is not available in OKLA that I can find, just 91. Will I need Octane boost? Any other advice on these motors would be great too. My first SC motors so help a brother out. About 250 hours and top ends have been done already.
Thanks, Quinlan

Getting deeper see post 17

91 was the latest requirement.

Good motor, depending on the supercharger model you need to keep an eye on the rear bearings of the SC.

I loved mine and never had a problem with it.

bigboat28 11-17-2008 08:41 AM

What are you getting?

kjm5125 11-17-2008 07:47 PM

With 91 Octane you'll be fine.

Quinlan 11-18-2008 05:40 PM

The motors are in a 02 Top gun. Waiting on a new trailer to take delivery. Von Bongo, I have heard about the bearing issues and not sure what has been done to the SC's. What should I ckeck for? Was there a certin year that they had issues?
Thanks again Quinlan

An 02' will be a Weiand supercharger, they have
"wet" bearings in the rear.

The oil in the front and rear need to be changed
periodically.

The later B&M's with the sealed ball bearings
in the rear were the one's that had issue's.

They're great engines.
you'll love them.

Is this the boat ?

Your good Jaay!!! Anybody no any history? I have been told it was in the National Marine fiasco.

Von Bongo 11-18-2008 06:48 PM

I'd pull them off as soon as you get them and send them to the blower shop to be rebuilt. It isn't real expensive and cheap insurance for a couple trouble free years of boating.

If you don't know the history of them, I wouldn't take the chance but that will be up to you.

Here's Johnny 11-18-2008 07:18 PM

I actually found a used blower and sent it to TBS for rebuild...then sent the others in one at a time.....didn't miss a single day and I have the spare ready to go.........and you will love the 575sci package.......I love mine. Just this season they hit 300 hrs and I am now in the process of a complete overhaul.....overall they were still in good shape but best I did it know rather then in the middle of summer........ good luck wih your new boat she is a beauty!!!!!

Quinlan 11-18-2008 08:05 PM

Thanks for the advice. Will be making some calls soon. Dont want to go down this summer!!

Steve Zuckerman 11-18-2008 08:54 PM

You'll be fine with 91 octane. The 575 is a well built, under tuned motor, with lots of room for build ups.
The stock compression ratio is only 7.5:1, and the stock blower setup makes 4PSI of boost.
I would change the head gaskets at the 1st opportunity. The stock head gaskets are the gray slick graphite GM stock type, which sucks. I'll bet 75% of the warranty claims Mercury had on these motors were due the stock gaskets blowing. Felpro makes a nice replacement version.
You might also want to check with Darren Mayer Performance Engineering for blower service. I've been very happy with them for sales and service. www.dmpeinc.com
Nice Gun, BTW!
Regards,
Steve

I've been watching that boat for a while, saw that it sold,
did the math, figured it was a good guess:D

I tried to talk myself in to it, but I knew
getting rid of the exsisting one now is
pretty much impossible..... I even turned
one of my friends on to it...but, he was in the same boat.

Looks like a sweet ride though, good luck with it.

Came from Florida, Lucky Strike Jr may have some history. I had traded e-mails with him about it before it came up to Missouri.

I was interested in it but came across Kevins boat which worked better for what I wanted to do. Looks like they were able to move a number of boats this fall.

Quinlan 11-19-2008 08:52 AM

Kevin has been a great source of advice on this whole process, and that Tiger he has is really sweet!!!
Hopefully we will have the trailer and take delivery right after Thanksgiving. So if you hear some noise that week on LOTO it SHOULD be me!!

Great looking cig. You'll like the 575's. I've used DMPE, talk to Bryan Dietz on the blower work. He'll hook you up.
Enjoy:drink:

Talked to the Blower shop today. Will be sending in this winter.Cheap ins for trouble free boating!!!! Now how to package them so UPS cant phuk them up.

Quinlan 11-27-2008 06:12 AM

Well now there is an issue w one motor. I guess the dist shaft and the cam had an issue working together! They are replacing the shaft, cam and lifters. Need some opinions on what might cause this?
Quinlan

JRider 11-27-2008 10:43 AM

I have heard of distributer issues but cant remember if it is soft metal on the dist or cam gear. May be a good time to upgrade cams and headgaskets on both motors.

If there is metal from the cam gear and distributor gear in the engine, then the entire engine should be gone through.

Sounds like the Dist shaft broke. They have the engine apart and all looks good. I guess oil changes after each run and have it checked for metal??
