Spun Bravo one drive coupler ????

3 Attachment(s)
How do ya tell if its bad, It looks like it to me. This was a brand new one out of the Hustler 104 hours,I never felt it slip, also I had change to turning the props in,I was running it hard and ran a 105 before taking them out.

The flywheel side has rubber stuff stuck to the surface, slung out wards,in the pick on the drive side,no rubber and no grease that slung,

The Starboard side is the original one 2001.

Thanks for any suggestions

its just grease on this one,

ezstriper 11-25-2008 06:23 AM

if it spun you would know it when you ran it..no such thing as a little slippage....grease from the splines makes them look funky..Rob

When a coupler goes, it makes a mess; rubber goes everywhere. Some times you can limp home though.
An HP500 coupler is like $300 from CP Performance; at least it was a couple of years ago when I lost one.

As far as I know, they are good until they are bad. Unless it is obviously blown apart, there is no way of telling by looking at them. I am surpirsed to see that you are running those. I run the long style steel coupler. I thought they were better?

ezstriper 11-25-2008 10:07 AM

thats true, mine has a much larger hub...

Mr Gadgets 11-25-2008 12:44 PM

Vinny, Strip,
I was told there are no splines on the inside of the longer hub. I think they use if for a gease seal looks like it would cover the first oring on the newer input shafts. Not sure if the splines on each model are the same length or not. Have not had one in hand to measure. If someone has one they can measure for me, I will compare them to steel short hub.
I have a new one on the shelf if someone needs it. It is the short shaft hub, PN 861523A18. The longer one costs almost $100 more, PN 861523A7. Both have steel hubs.

On the first picks flywheel side theres no grease at all on it,thats all rubber,

To me that has to be a sign of it melting, hat do youall think?

Whats the diff is the other hubs?
Thanks,Rob:ernaehrung004:

Vinny P 11-25-2008 06:20 PM

Dick,
You are right, there are no extended splines in the long stlye hub. I could have measured mine, but I droppd the engine back in already. Not to worry, it wont be in there too long!

I dont know what the difference is, or even if there is a difference between the long and short style hubs. I was told the long style is better from someone.. dont remember who.

Yes when they go you will def. know. We had our family out one time and they called me saying the blew the motor because they herd this horrible shreaking noise and all they could smell was burning rubber and tons of smoke pouring out of the hatch when they opened it up. I made them tow it home too a look at it and it turned out to be a spun drive coupler.

Ryan8886 11-26-2008 08:15 PM

Replacing both of mine right now. From what I was told, if you look inside the coupler from the drive side and the rubber splines are worn to points, like teeth....then they're on the way out. The splines should be flat, similar to the splines on the shaft. Although my issue was caused by the prior owner having never greased them, so not sure if the same symptom/diagnosis would apply.

racinfever 11-26-2008 10:15 PM

Your coupler is going south!!

The splines look fine, here is some closer picks, its melted rubber, Theres no grease on this side.

You can see were the spline piece and the rubber meet, it looks like it melted in there ,the other stuff looks like slung melted rubber. Its weird the old one looks OK, the new one going out that soon? What do you all think?

Thanks for the input

I spun mine and was able to limp home I just couldn't go on plane I paid around 350 from cp

Mr Gadgets 11-28-2008 12:59 PM

Stip,
may be a case of the newer one being built in a not so quality manner as the first one. It looks like toast to me. I would replace it..

I lost the coupler in my Donzi this past summer, no burnt rubber, no noise, no nothin', no movement.

Took all the splines out of the center of the coupler.

Strip,
Merc offers three different ones that I know of.. The aluminum hub, the short steel hub, and the long steel hub.
My point is that the old one may have been made by a different supplier and it was made better in the old days.
The ones I just ordered a few months back look like the one on the left, accept the back side is not painted. I ordered one for myself, to hold back my new procharged motor, hp to be determined when it is finished. The other was for a customer and it didnt arrive in time for him, so he purchased one elsewhere.. so I have the extra one.
The long steel hub is for the grease seal on the input shaft. Not sure if it is stronger or not. Dont know if either have different rubber compounds or not..

Ken,
Usually the aluminum hubbed units will wear out the splines like you mentioned..

D!ck, I called Merc racing today, they suggested the new style like the one that comes with the 525 and 600sc's the one with the snout, he said it still has a rubber hub in it.

I wonder if its just the longer steel hub the only diff between the old style,

Yea I bet the old one is made diff,Even the one in my old Scarab never went out with 800+,14 years
Rob:drink:

I painted it
