Power Steering Pump??
 

I've come across a method to eliminate the power steering pump from my full hydraulic external steering.

Probably some of you old-school racers can give some pro's and con's to the method.

Pressurized power steering fluid tank ???????

My pump is shot and I need to do something ASAP and this sounds workable to me.

do a search on this subject... I started a post about this about a 4-6 weeks ago. The bottom line was, there was no current substitute currently available such as a 12 volt or other hydraulic pump to handle the flow requirements of a full system.

Has this changed, anyone????:)

I remember reading the string ... but I don't think you mentioned having the system already pressurized ... I think you were trying to figure how to pressureize the system without a steering pump.

I am talking of pressurizing the system and holding the pressure.

How much pressure would a steering pump pump if a steering pump could pump pressure???

Or,

How much pressure should a steering pump generate?

sorry, I cannot answer those questions. they are unknowns to me. Hydraulics is someone else's specialty!! I wish I knew. Sure would be nice to eliminate the pumps, but the air pressure adea seems too easy . :(

I think the hoses are rated for around 2000 psi.

I think you can do this with a different hydraulic helm. I think it is called a Capilano self contained helm. This is what outboard guys use for their hydraulic steering. It may make the steering a little stiff, but getting rid of the power steering pump would free up some hp and clean up the motor a bit. I'm sure someone has tried this.

I used to have a 24' Bannana boat with twin TRS drives and it had full hydraulic external steering with a pressure tank. There was no power steeering pump, it worked great. The system was by Hynautic in Fla.

Kurt, that is the answer I was looking for. I was just at a friends shop and we were bleeding his steering on a 27 Magnum with the Hynautic system. The only area I question is the size of the steering rams. They were much smaller in diameter with a small shaft. Can this application be used with the larger rams being used today.

Kurt, can you compare the feel or steering effort betwen the Hynautic and using a power steering pump? And, would you reccomend this setup on a larger twin.

i have a hynautic system on my little boat thats for sale. it is basically a pump at the helm, a pressurized accumulator tank, a couple hoses and a cylinder. at slow speeds it's a little more work but it's also less stuff to break and less parasitic horsepower loss.
