Also, how many horse are the HP500's? Are they actually 500, or is that measurement at the prop? sorry for the ignorance

A fresh from the factory HP500 was rated at 470HP +- a couple. But very reliable as long as you had the tall risers coming off the GIL manifolds. Sometimes there was a reversion problem with the flat tails. THat is why Merc changed over to the tall riser.

With CMI's on them, they wre virtually indestructible unless you just totally abused and mistreated them.

thanks jeff, I thought the little tag that was on the valve covers said they were 500 horse (I figured it was exaggerated).

Did they say 500HP or HP500.

I don't know why they say that? One of our more historical guru's out here might be a better source. Maybe they were just marketed as 500.

From what I understand the current 525 has a pretty broad band.

If you took a random sampling, I have heard you will get nywhere from 500-585 on a dyno.

This might be the dyno also.

If you hve them, just use them. They are good engines.

They actually said 500 h.p., most likely under ideal conditions

I heard the same for the 525's, and that they were rated that at the prop.... but what drive..etc...

I don't have them, but I'm trying to weigh the price difference vs. performance between the 420's and 500's since hey should both drop into my hull.

They will all dropinto your hull. If you can get a good deal on 500's, go with them. since they are a bigger block, you can upgrade later on if you choose.

420's can only be stroked to 496's. 502's can be stroked to 540, and then you have something.

You can also buy my 496's at the right price also. I hate to let them go because of all the time I have in them, but I just on't see a boat in their immediate future.

Price for 2 sets, any tails ? I'm having my 420's rebuilt, have stock merc manifolds. Those pre gil/mercruiser exhaust are a joke, if any one is still running these, change the rubber gaskets and remove the stainless tails, make sure the water passages are clear of scale. Mine were nearly blocked at the riser and tail flange. I guess the first owner did very little maintenance to the manifold gaskets, and I'm sure it was the cause of both engine failures. I decided to keep the 420's because of their reputation, but will upgrade to roller cams.

If you do have the original cast aluminum exhaust, open up the elbow and throw the STEEL separators out. These thin plates vibrated holes into the water jackets of the manifolds and destroyed my port engine !!

500hp at the crank and 470hp at the prop.

My original 420 exhaust (not gil's) leaked so i went with the imco's for trs application. I am really happy so far with two seasons on them
