Oil temp sender location
 

going to install a oil temp gauge and wondering where is the best place to put it the sender...I have 2 plugged 1/2 npt fittings on my remote oil filter mount, was thinking about there ?? thanks Rob

Do a search, this topic has been talked about in hundreds of threads.

I have always put mine in the filter pad for ease of location.
I am looking for a Fluctuation in temp regardless to where the sender is placed. If it reads higher than normal I would get concerned.

You want it in the engine block. I have mine right in the main galley hole right above the filter mount on the side of the engine you have to make sure you are not blocking the galley too. block even oil pan is a good . If you know the engine is not going to bypass the remote oil cooler and filter install it right in the remote filter housing.

Pan is the best place,,,,, you want to know what is going into the engine.

Ok, I have been thinking about this....scary I know..but would it not be better to pick up oil temp away from the engine ? that way you are not getting a false reading from the temp the block is running vs just the oil ?? just a thought....Rob

Absolutely,,,,,i always take it from the filter !!!!!

Remote Filter, this is the oil temp that is entering the block.The oil in the pan is before your cooler.
Just MY 2. If you stick a sensor in the side of a oil galley you will restict the oil flow.:eek:

I have 2 senders one in the oil coming off the motor one in the oil coming off the cooler to the engine. I run one gauge and a simple switch under the hatch that I can change from one to the other. I usually monitor oil temp I am feeding the engine. I did this just to check how well my oil cooler was working a while back. Senders are pretty cheap.

seemed logical to me as you would get a "true oil temp" note heat from the block etc...

I use a temperture gun, but 2 senders is a nice option.. :drink:

Yea I have an IR gun and it is useful but the problem or the issue I had was checking under power. Once I slow readings change rather quickly. :ernaehrung004:

I should have posted my meter has 4 Temperture input leads,if not stick your friend under the engine hatch!!!:evilb:

In the pan, you want oil temp after it has cycled through the engine. A spike in temp will tell you if something is loosing lubrication (IE bearing failure). Wet sump system take it in the pan, dry sump take it in the tank.

Problem is when most people ask it is an existing installation and it will be difficult to add a pan located sensor .....
