gasket set
 

just out of curiosity, what makes a mercruiser gasket set for a 502 worth about 800 bucks ? is there some magic there not available from felpro etc ?

I am betting that the fact it says Mercruiser on the box is the biggest factor :) I have always used FelPro marine sets and have never had a problem. We have recently started using the Cometic MLS head gaskets on higher HP engines, but they are only needed in certain applications. I would say that you will be perfectly safe using Fel Pro.

yes merc likes there name alot !!! and they don't make gaskets !!!! I remember years ago doing a engine job at a boat dealership on a smallblock, pulled a merc head gasket out of parts, opened it only to find a victor gasket inside and a triple price mark up !!! ummm they must pay alot for their package.....never use them unless you have $$ to burn...

I bought a couple of sets of Merc gaskets for a pair of Bulldogs, I was pretty suprised/dissapointed to find that the majority of items in the box were labelled either GM or Mr Gasket!

Head gaskets, pan gasket and intake are the only ones that are really important. Get the good stuff. The rest is just whatever they are carrying at the parts house for BBC. I have used just about all the different ones you can find.
