yeah my plan is to take the motor out and put new bearings in and new pistons unless i can just re-ring it. Also putting a whipple on it so that would be the best route i think. Hey steve, so did you just re-ring or whole new pistons? also u have the part number for those rings?

Steve,
I think that you will find that the reason for this is the Mercruiser engines are basically GMPP crate engines with minor modifications. GM made the decision to go with the low tension rings and they did have a lot of problems with them :( bottom end looks brand new as do the pistons et al and everything measures up perfectly... it was just a 2 cycle more or less. |

it ran fine. i only took it apart because it just seemed really lazy up top plus one of the exhaust manifolds put some water in a cylinder and rusted a valve open which then got nicked when it got started up. the other one runs fine as well but after seeing the top end of this this one, i assume it looks the same so im going to freshen it as well. i would be reticent to give you the part number for the rings because i wouldn't want your motor which might be a different gen than mine, have a different ring pack. just call the guys at total seal and talk to them. they show the ring pack i'm using on their web site and i really believe they are the same but i wouldn't want to be the guy to steer you wrong. talk to the guys that make the stuff. for the record, i have used total seals in about a trillion motors and was very very happy with them. |
