Engine rebuild: Magnum 454/365hp
 

First of all, I have never worked with v8 engines before.
So right now i am just trying to make a list of what i remember that i changed in some older car-engines that i have rebuilt, i dont have a clue were to find the best parts for the right price so thats what i really need help with.

I am planing for to make a rebuild of my engine.

I would really need some help with to make a list and a budget of the complete rebuild.

This is just a budget, so i want to count really high so i don't get suprised as the work goes on.
So if you can help me to complete my list with parts you think i should change.
I am doing as much work as i can on my own, so you dont need to count "mechanic time" in.




Pistons -
Piston rings -
Rod bearings -
Main bearings -
Cam bearings -
Complete gasket kit -
Oil pump -
Oil pump drive shaft -
Timing chain kit -
Grade 8 bolts for the rotating Assemblie -
Chromemoly push rods -

go to www.summitracing.com . that web site has all the parts you need in various quality ranges. for budget purposes , you can get a good idea.

also. one major expense you might run up against is machine work if the block needs to be bored and valve jobs done and heads surfaced etc.

it isn't a difficult job but you will need proper precision measuring tools and some significant engine building experience to get it correct.

we wouldn't want you next post to start with ... " gee , i just rebuilt my motor and when i strated it, it shot a rod though the bottom of the boat and then caught fire and sank. does anyone know what went wrong ?"

My machine work (including one head needing two seats) two complete sets of heads getting valve jobs, new springs, guides and seals, plus two blocks tanked, checked and honed was around $1,500.

I have a COMPLETE list of what I ordered, all gaskets, new intakes, cams, every single thing except for pistons and crank.


If you want to I can fax the orders to you so you can get an idea of what a rebuild will cost (adding or subtracting stuff you want or don't want.
95% of my stuff was ordered from Summit. Best price around for sure.

I had 2700 in parts (two motors), that included new intakes, cams, and some other stuff above and beyond the rebuild. Have a little over $4K into them at this point not counting a dozen trips to the parts store for odds and ends.

Realistically, I think including having the heads gone over, you could get it freshened up for around $1800.00 total using decent parts (might as well get an RPM air gap intake while you are in there).
