496 Head Bolts
Need torque specs for 496 head bolts, thanks jeff

Contact Merc Tech Support. It is a combination of intial torque to set the bolts and then degrees rotation (two sequences to complete) for final loading since these bolts are designed to provide the necessary clamp load by yielding/streaching at the properload. That is why they are not reusable. Merc or GM are the only sources for these head bolts. ARP does have studs and nuts for this application.

If it is a HO motor Raylar has the ARP bolts not studs. That is what mine has. Shoot him a PM

Jeff,
The bolts are torqued as follows. 1. Torque all bolts to 22 lbft 2. Turn all bolts 120 degrees 3. Turn long bolts additional 60 degrees 4. Turn Medium bolts additional 45 degrees 5. Turn short bolts additional 30 degrees Fel Pro has a very inexpensive plastic angle gauge that goes on your ratchet and makes it very easy to do this correctly. If you will be doint this on a regular basis, Snap On has a much nicer one, or you could spring for one of the new electronic torque wrenches that also indicate angles. Head bolts must be replaced, not reusable. Bill Koustenis Advanced Automotive Machine Waldorf Md |
