crane ignition ???
I have a crane HI-6 ignition box and thunderbolt 4 dist. I recieved the box used which I have not installed. I was running longer wires and noticed the large power wire is in bad shape. The copper wire is black and falling apart, should I just stay with the stock ignition or buy a new crane box. I have no idea how old this box was but it had a couple of wires that where cut and reconnected with butt connectors. Any suggestions, I have a 502 gen6 and would like to keep the stock dist. Thanks

think you can send it to Crane and have it re-cond. & tested, alot of guys luv.em

They can not fix the unit it is incased in rubber , the box is trashed.

Keep cutting the wire shorter until you have fresh copper then add new wire from there and be sure you seal it properly.
If you still haven't found any fresh copper when you run out of wire then it's a bit more complicated to fix it... |
they do repair them..the box is not trashed....Rob

no they can't repair this box I sent it back . The box has a metal top and sides, but all the compents and wires are incased in rubber which can not be removed. They build the circuit pour rubber on it just like when they cast something. If anyone knows of a good one let me know.

Is it worth buying a new one or just use the stock module. what are some other opinions on useing the stock dist.

Can the stock module take an aftermarket ECoil like the crane PS91 92? If so, that may get you a bit more spark.
I've got a spare HI6N (Nascar) version you can try if you like? I ran one in my last ski-race boat with a crane PS91 E Coil, MSD 85551 Pro Billet Dist and it worked a treat. I'm running an MSD HVC ignition with a Pro Billet 85551 dist this time, should be good. If the wires out of your box (at the box) are okay but the rest is shot, cut it all off and splice in new wires, make sure you keep the same gauge and insulation thickness. If the wires are crap all the way to the box, it's likely the wires have corroded the connectors inside the box as well and the box is cactus, if they haven't, they will soon. Either way, I've read alot of posts about people running up to +800hp with the stock Thunderbolt IV Ign so you shouldn't be left wanting, I just didn't have one to start with so I've made do with what I thought would work best. Let me know if you want that HI6N. Regards, John |
