305 upgrade

To get more power would it be better to supercharge this motor or build a up a 350?

jeffswav 03-09-2009 06:41 PM

If you want to stay with a small block build a 383 stroker. Basically start from scratch if you have a 305. I am more into BBC others on here are more familiar with SBC.

outlaw02 03-09-2009 06:45 PM

I dont want the weight of a BBC.

Get a 350 block and have it bored and stroked to a 383. Most of your parts can be reused. Like the distubutor, alternator, ect... You will need new heads, intake and carb. Or a aftermaket EFI system.

it has efi now can a reuse that ?

If you are serious and really want the engine to run well, then the FIRST upgrade you're going to need is a better breathing aftermarket exhaust system----the stock Merc exhaust system is pretty crude! Stainless Marine exhaust systems would be a great improvement. Also, I think I have seen some USED SBC aftermarket marine exhaust systems in the classifieds. Do a search.

There are a few different choices here for small block application also.

The engine OEM's seem to agree on the brand of exhaust systems to use.

build a 427 ci small block via world products. That would be awesome in a small outlaw, maybe dangerous, but fun.

I agree.
Build a 400 sb chevy.
stroke this engine, and with good heads and parts, you can easily get 500hp or more!!!!
I have 6 sb400s for sale.
Some 2 bolt some 4 bolt mains.
Will sell for a good price!!!

I didn't mention that it only has a aphla dive

My brother has a healthy 350 in front of an Alpha drive in his Formula 21 LS. Runs great and no drive problems.

I recommend not putting $$ towards supercharging the 305. You can build or buy in a nice 350 or 383 and get a significant performance gain. Far less complicated and fewer headaches.

Thats the way I was leaning. Thanks for the help guys

If you want to stay cheap, put a set of good aftermarket 350 heads, high flow exhaust and a highrise manifold on the 305 with your stock efi retuned to flow about twice the fuel / air.
Shave the heads to jack the compression, run a high output ignition and have done with it.
I built a 305 for my old ski-race boat that had around 400hp, N/A carbed easy. the 305 is a light and under-rated motor if you tweak it right. But the easiest way to make more power is to stroke a 350 to 383, the 400 SB won't rev easy enough to feel like a powerful 350, besides, people make more kits for the 350-383 conversion that cost less for better quality.
Also, check this out: http://www.popularhotrodding.com/eng...ine/index.html
Good luck!
