Gibson Turn Down Tips
Who runs them and how do you like them?
My boat is just stupid loud and I see folks on the docks holding their ears and even had some people to applaud when I turned the engines off. My GGB mufflers help take the edge off but I really like the concept of these turn downs. http://www.gibsonmarine.com/turndowns.html I would love to hear your experience with these. Thanks Doc |
:drink:They keep your sunpad nice and wet! But it's better than losing 300 RPM's with their mufflers. My choice this year also.

I like em loud!!

so do I but the fish cops are trying to finance the government with tickets. I am making my own tips with 4" polished tube and angling them down for under water at dead slow and out when on plane... sounds like my swim platform is going to get wet. its water proof:ernaehrung004: |
Mark,
Guys around here have run them for years. But when on plane they are still pretty loud. One friend ran them and still didn't like the noise level at cruise, so he went to a switchable setup.. with down pipes. Now he can start the motor at the dock and everyone knows he is there.. then he shuts them and everyone is happy.. :) :).. Dick |
turn downs
Dock, I have 'em on my 24 Lavey with Ilmor 710. I love the things.
I got the long ones and at idle you can talk and be heard without raising your voice. I was the object of some criticism at the dock, restaurants, etc , so I understand where you are coming from. On plane and running they are about the same as my Gibson mufflers. I know that every boat will experience different levels of sound with turn downs, but they are great for me. Quent |
I have the long one's, and they do splash a lot of water, but sitting at the dock is much better, they help a little at cruise also, but the main thing is the fish cops don't all turm and look as soon as I start up.

I'm just about ready for you to go for a ride. |
They work and are inexpensive. I have run them on my last two boats with no issue.

Quent Thanks very much for the reply. At idle and around the docks is all I am looking for. I thought they would have to blow a lot of bubbles in the water but it sounds worse than I thought it would be. My concern is for my wife or anyone else on the swim platform as we back into a dock. If it is too bad I actually have a possible solution in mind that would be easy to do on the aluminum platform to shield it. If we don't police ourselves they will do is for us and it will cost a lot more than the turn down pipes! $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ Doc |

larry Never heard that before but I like that! |
Is water reversion any problem turning these pipe ends down in to the water?
|
Any of you guys have pictures of them installed on a vee with twins?
I just measured and there should not be an issue on the outside but they will be just a few inches above the tabs. My concern is in the center. I think if I angle them both toward the center I will be fine but they are going to be real close to the steering rams if not. Thanks |

I had GGB make me a set a couple years ago as their mufflers were too loud. I was 94 db at idle  and certainly would not pass the Wisconsin idle db limit (86 db :()
I NEVER had ANY reversion issues and they sounded GREAT on plane as well as cut some of the interior resonance.... The only thing I didn't like was the lack of "dock presence"... sounded little better than a Sea Ray at idle, (82 db at idle) but I suppose I could've cut them a bit shorter to get more sound out of them...... http://i130.photobucket.com/albums/p...e/P1020877.jpg Doug |

I had them on my 42' Cigarette and they made a ton of difference it did keep the swim platform area wet when at the dock but How long do you stay there idling anyway.
It made the boat legal also with law enforcement here compared to being WAY over the limit before. Mine were not Gibson they were custom made by CMI since Gibson did not offer 5" turn downs. Here is a vid from a run where you see the boat starting as well as a bunch of pictures. I have sold the boat to Japan but still have the turndowns, they will likely go on to the MTI if we can make them fit. Can someone tell me why these would not work? I am just not spending $500 + for a 4" single wall pipe with 1 bend. I do not plan to use them often. |

Not a real good idea to have ANYONE on the swim platform if you're backing up:eek:
Usually they are simply sitting on the sun pad with their feet on the swim platform. |

I was determined to meet Minnesota's ultra strict 84dB limit at idle because just getting stopped by the fish police ruins my day on the water. I also wanted to keep from bubbling directly under the swim platform and keep soot off the transom, so I went with more of an angled design. GGB built these turn-downs to my spec. They're bolted onto HPI mufflers and have DMP internal flappers. The biggest hurdle was clearing the center turn-downs with the tie-bar in the trailer position. Imco fabbed custom saddle mounts to get the tie-bar farther back. I have not had this setup on the water, yet. But, here's how it all turned out.
I sure wish I had known GGB was doing that when I bought mine a few years back. They are out of business now right? The IMCO brackets are perfect. They look nice and solve the same problem I am faced with. I'll have to check into those. Thanks |

I do not have any problems with water splashing on the swim platform, as mine is solid. The only downside is that for 80% of the time I'd LIKE them to be louder. My boat is very sedate looking but has a VERY mean sound at idle. Really grabs peoples attention, and usually in a good way, but for the odd time it piss's someone off, it's not worth it. |

When I use to live in Grand Haven MI. the cops got pretty nasty because of the property owners complaining. I was always one being reported and I hated it. Some boaters would even use pvc turn downs with a simple on - off pin type set up. Some boaters to this day still get all uptight when I pull up. TO BAD. Most offen they are the ones reading a book in their yuppie little sail boat with their dog aboard wearing some little gay outfit.
My advice, unless of course it's the fuzz, is to tell them to blow it out their as*. Enjoy what you have and be proud of it... |
