mercury bridgeport 2.4 efi engine

I hear some good and a lot of bad on these engines. looking at a checkmate with twins on it, motors are 1989 2.4 efi's-bridgeports. What does everyone know on these. As far as I know they are pretty much stock and had recent power head rebuids. They also have counter rotating cle gear cases, one had a fair amount of in and out play on the prop shafts, is that normal?

i had to pass on an 87 rumrunner due to the b-ports...didn't seem too reliable and high maintenance... however, they were the hi-po deal at the time...a great bargaining chip on an older boat...did you see the recent write up of the ob 28'er in hot boat...sweet set up, great performance....

My old boat had hopped up 2.4's and in a very short time I became a very good outboard mechanic in order to keep them running. Use of good fuel and the best oil is mandatory.
Then keep plenty of tools and spare parts onboard.

Good engines, kept mine running for 10+ years. Spare parts are a must. Good gas and oil is a plan too! Thirsty!!!

I had a Signature with three headaches on her
You will become a expert on them.
Great Engines get some spairs bro.

Every now and then I stumble on some needle bearings
on my garage floor.
Stators, Coil packs. Keep these instock.

Mix your gas and oil by hand.

If you cant spin a wrench then find a old outboard guy at a marina
and become his best friend.

Good Luck
