Engine coupler

How can you tell if your engine coupler is still good. I'm replacing the engine in my boat with a new one with a little more power. Is there a way to tell if the coupler from the original motor is worthy ? Seems like an expensive item to buy "just to be sure". Thanks.

yes it is expensive , but if you have to pull your motor out and replace it later it will be a lot more....

so... a coupler is 250 bucks. on a percentage basis, what is that compared to :

a) what you just spent

b) what you will spend a second time to fix it, including the tow home and any other damage.

be smart. buy new ones and sell your old ones on ebay to someone NOT as smart as you.

"not as smart as me"...lol. I'm pulling a stock 330 hp BBC 454, and putting in a 500 hp 502 Mag. I thought they were around $400 ? Was just wondering if I was wasting my money or not. Any suggestions on which one to get ? Thanks guys.

ck the splines to see if any wear,or sharp tops, then look for any slung rubber like it melted

If it shows any where on the splines or is more than 5-7 years old, I'd replace it while the engine is out.

Ok..agreed. Now does anybody have any suggestions on which one to get ? Its a 500 hp motor ( Gen 4 502 Mag ), bravo 1, 26' Chris Craft Limited. Thanks, and please try and include part numbers.
