Engine overheating- Advice needed
 

My formula's 350 mag is getting hotter on one side than on the
other. I can put my hand on the exhaust tube beween the manifold and the transom and one side is warm the other is hot. I'm also getting steam out of the hot side of the engine, out of the through hull. Could this be a blown head gasket, cracked head, ect?

The first thing to do, is to make sure there are not restrictions/ debris in the water hoses and passages. This could be foreign debris, or a piece of impeller. BTW have you checked the condition of the inpeller? Ya might have low water volume. Many times, one side of the motor will run slightly warmer than the other. Low water volume can make this worse.

X2 it sounds like loss of water flow. If you take the time to check your impeller you might as well just change it.

Looks like everyone is in agreement here. I'll dig into the impeller then. Thats an easy fix, and is a good ideal to change anyway.

and while you're replacing it, backflush everything to get any debris out.

I am having the same problem on my '98 7.4L MPI. I changed the impeller, pump housing, and back flushed. The thermostat was changed also ( i tested thermostat in hot water too). I still get steam coming from the left exhaust and the exhaust elbow is a lot hotter then the right. After about 10-15 minutes on the muffs I can barely keep my hand on that elbow, while the other one is nearly cool to the touch. Any thoughts???
